My preoccupation with the way children do, or do not, learn about food led me to develop a comprehensive gardening and cooking program at an inner-city Melbourne school – The Kitchen Garden at Collingwood College. This project commenced in 2001.
The early work of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation was made possible by several generous individuals, by the Victorian state government and by philanthropic Foundations.
In 2014 I was awarded the significant honour of becoming an Officer of the Order of Australia in recognition of the work of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation.
The Foundation has gone from strength to strength and has passed its stated mission, to be represented in 10% of Australian schools with a primary curriculum by the end of 2015.
As of September 2016 we are represented in more than 11% of primary schools and in more than 1000 schools and learning spaces, Australia-wide. Our growth continues.
In 2020, the program has expanded its reach with two pilot programs, The Kitchen Garden Program for Early Childhood and The Kitchen Garden Program for Secondary Years, making pleasurable food education available for all levels of the school curriculum.
